Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is seeking applicants for its 2027 Artist-in-Residence (AiR) programme, to create work inspired by SURF, which is set in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. The SURF AiR programme, a partnership with Black Hills State University (BHSU), enables artists to work at 4,850 feet deep. SURF is the deepest underground laboratory in the United States and is located in the former Homestake Gold Mine. The facility houses world-class experiments in physics, biology, geology, and engineering. The SURF AiR programme leverages the unique characteristics of SURF and the science experiments it hosts to create awareness and encourage interdisciplinary work.
Artists who apply for and are considered for the SURF AiR program should have a strong professional record including major regional, national or international exhibitions, or similarly documented experience. Artists in all media are encouraged to apply. This includes but is not limited to visual artists, filmmakers, writers, and musicians.
