Julia Schäfer
Mentee: Raphael Sbrzesny
Julia Schäfer (*1991) lives and works in Paris. She studied Fine Art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart with Alexander Roob and Ricarda Roggan, as well as at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Tel Aviv.
In her video works and site-specific installations, she investigates narratives of loss by dissolving the boundary between documentation and fiction. Drawing on her family’s butcher’s shop, she approaches meat production as a metaphor for the dialectic of pleasure and pain, violence and care.
Her work has been shown at Non-Étoile in Paris, Supergau Festival in Salzburg, the 41st Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival, Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen and EIGEN+ART Lab in Berlin, among others. She has received grants from Stiftung Kunstfonds, the Academy of Arts Berlin and the State of Baden-Württemberg. In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. In autumn 2026, she will begin a residency with Urbane Künste Ruhr.
