The Kunstbüro

MENTORING

Since 2020 Kunstbüro Mentoring has been facilitating intensive and long-term 1:1 exchange between established art producers and artists that find themselves at the beginning of their careers. The eighteen month-long programme provides helpful support for artists with a connection to Baden-Württemberg, especially in the years following their graduation from an art academy.

The programme is announced every two years – artists were able to apply for the 2024/25 year until 01.04.2024. The next call for applications will take place at the beginning of 2026.

The mentors of the 2024/25 year are Charlotte Eifler (Karlsruhe/Leipzig), Helen Feifel (Berlin), Sofia Hultén (Berlin/Stuttgart), Kalin Lindena (Berlin/Karlsruhe), Anike Joyce Sadiq (Berlin), Raphael Sbrzesny (Berlin), Havîn Al-Sîndy (Berlin/Düsseldorf/Kurdistan) and Fabian Treiber (Stuttgart).

We are delighted to announce the mentees selected by the mentors for the new 2024/25 cohort! The selected promising artists represent the diversity and quality of art production in Baden-Württemberg:

From artists, for artists

The goal of the programme is to share the know-how and experience of established art producers with a new generation. Mentees are encouraged not only in their development as artists, but in their professionalisation and positioning the art field. During the course of the Kunstbüro Mentoring they are provided with perspectives and approaches that are essential for setting up a business in the artistic field.

Networking & the first steps

The mentors monitor the first steps taken in professional careers, establish contacts and give skilled advice regarding the positioning of one’s own work, on funding opportunities and applications as well as on building a professional environment. In this way, mentees at the outset of their artistic careers can benefit from the experiences of established artists in different ways.

Mentees are also interconnected as a group within the programme. They regularly meet for visits to studios and exhibitions and exchange news regarding their artistic work and the current issues that affect them – such as grant applications, funding, studio situations, exhibitions, fair pay or care work available in the world of art.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applications are open to artists who are at the beginning of their freelance careers and have completed their studies at an art academy in Baden-Württemberg and/or whose work and life is based in Baden-Württemberg.

The “Kunstbüro Mentoring” has no age limit, however, no more than five years may have passed since graduation (at the time of the application deadline).

What do I need to submit for the application?

To be submitted (must be submitted digitally via the   application form):

– Artist statement  (approx. 1,500 characters, roughly one-half of an ISO 216 page)
– Portfolio bzw. Abbildungen der künstlerischen Werke (maximal 25 Seiten);
Video artists: min. a link to at least one video (Vimeo, for example)
– Resume
– Motivational letter  (approx. 2,000 characters, roughly one ISO 216 page)

It should be made clear what the artist would like to work on throughout the mentoring, what is to be achieved by the end of the programme, and which mentor would be preferred and why.

Please complete the online application form in full and attach any included PDF files.

How are mentees chosen, and how does the matching process work?

The mentees are selected by the mentors together with the Kunstbüro. The artistic quality of the submitted work is the only deciding factor.

During the matching process the applicants’ preferences will be taken in into consideration. However, working together with one of the mentors mentioned cannot be taken for granted.

Applicants will be informed based on preliminary selections, followed by a first meeting (in person, by phone, or online) where a first round of questions and topics the mentee is looking for advice on and support in can be addressed.

At that point, both (mentor and applicant) come to an agreement as to whether they would like to begin working together in tandem. If a partnership isn’t the right choice, there is no requirement to take part in the mentoring programme.

How exactly does the mentoring programme work?

The programme begins with a joint workshop (kick-off) in which the mentees’ career questions and goals are looked at and a collaboration as a tandem team (mentor and mentee) is planned.

Mentor and mentee then negotiate the individual questions and organisational framework conditions of their collaboration. A quarterly meeting between mentor and mentee is a requirement when participating in the project; meetings or discussions beyond this are subject to individual agreement.

The mentee should be prepared to travel to the mentor’s work location. Visits together to, for example, exhibitions or studios can also take place. For this, mentees will receive a travel allowance. As part of the programme, mentors usually visit the mentee’s studio as well.

Mentees give regular feedback to the Kunstbürö regarding the current team collaboration. The Kunstbüro is always ready and available to help the mentors and mentees if questions should arise (either professional or concerning communication within their team).

The programme ends after eighteen months with a joint workshop in fall/winter 2023. After completing the programme, mentees are required to submit a written report on the process and outcome of the collaboration with their mentor.
