Katrin Ströbel

Mentee: Gin Bahc

Katrin Ströbel Katrin Ströbel (*1975) lives and works in Marseille, Stuttgart and Rabat. She studied fine arts and literature and, while concentrating on her artistic work on the relationship between text and images in contemporary art, completed a doctorate in art history. She is a mother.

Her drawings, site-specific works and installations are based on a critical questioning of the social and geopolitical conditions that define our everyday social life. The artist deconstructs gender relations and female stereotypes in various drawings and collages. Her work also deals with cultural codes and (visual) languages as well as colonialism, migration and displacement, and shows how strongly gender and geopolitics are interconnected.

Since 2004 Katrin Ströbel has worked in Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Peru, Australia and the United States of America among other places. She has been taking part in international solo and group exhibitions for around fifteen years. In 2013 she began teaching at the Villa Arson, École nationale supérieure d’art in Nice, France, and in spring 2023 she became a professor for drawing at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2013 Katrin Ströbel has been working together with Moroccan artist Mohammed Laouli on “frontières fluides – fluides boundaries”, a multimedia project that addresses migration and transit between Europe and Northern Africa.
