Wataru Murakami (*1983) lives and works in Berlin. He studied art history at the Sophia University in Tokyo and photography and media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Throughout his life he has been confronted with both Japanese and Western cultures – European and American specifically. The differences that exist between the two is what shapes his work.
The primary medium Murakami uses for his prints, booklets and installation art is photography. Currently his focus is set on urban space, capturing seemingly ordinary objects and observations in his personal surroundings that relate to history, social existence and the trends of our time.
Works by Wataru Murakami have been exhibited in Tokyo, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Leipzig, Düsseldorf and Naples among other places. In 2018, he was a fellow of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg.
